Public Research Opportunities

17-12-2024 CHACANA IV Project
There are crucial clues to the study of the Early Solar System in the myriad fragments of solid matter orbiting the Sun. When one of them hits Earth, the friction with the atmosphere heats it, causing the phenomena called “meteors.” If the fragment is large, it will survive and fall to Earth. That is a meteorite. The CHACANA Project aims to install and operate an all-sky camera network to detect meteors, triangulate their incoming paths, determine their origin orbits, connect them with a possible progenitor object, and estimate where the fragments fell for effective recovery. IPre IV builds on the previous ones. It will install the second camera in the network in San Francisco de Mostazal, work on the third, and produce the first triangulations.

14-12-2021 Photogrammetric application for high precision positioning of drones
The experiments to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation requiere high precision polarized calibrators. For this, our group is developing a drone based calibrator able to provide a polarized reference signal on the sky, requiring a high precision metrology system able to provide an extremely accurate position and aim of the drone while flying. Our system is based on photogrammetry (patent pending) and can monitor the polarization angle of the source with better than 0.1 degrees of absolute accuracy. In this IPRE the student will contribute to develop this metrology system, performing field tests with the drone, running experimental data analysis, developing of specialized photogrammetry software, and, if possible, can even participate in real site tests at the astronomical sites of northern Chile.

14-12-2021 Electromagnetic simulations of radiotelescopes
The cosmological experiments to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation require and exquisite control of the systematic effects introduced by the electromagnetic response of the telescopes. Our research group directly collaborates with several of the main CMB experiments installed in Chile, contributing with the characterization and control of their optical systematic effects. In this IPRE, the student will develop electromagnetic simulations of the optical response of these telescopes, studying their systematic effects and imperfections, significantly contributing the the scientific studies performed by these experiments.
