Propulsion of Ships Powered by Batteries and Green Hydrogen

The project was awarded under the 2025 Regular Technology Rings Competition of the National Research and Development Agency (ANID). The project aims to develop a comprehensive framework for the efficient management of electric vessels that use batteries and hydrogen as energy sources. The initiative aligns with the Chilean Navy's National Green Hydrogen Strategy and its Continuous National Shipbuilding Plan, aiming to strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of the national maritime sector. The project also has the support of the Chilean Navy and the companies Saam Towage and Dhemax, which reinforces its applied focus and its potential impact on national industry.

Main lines of research:

1. Optimal management of energy vectors under uncertainty.

2. The second focuses on electrical infrastructure and microgrids.

3. Electric propulsion and conversion systems.

IPRE is focused on line 3 but has potential for collaboration in the other lines.

Fast Battery Charging for Submarines

ANID Ring Project in collaboration with the Chilean Navy

Are you interested in power electronics applied to defense and high naval technology? Join a cutting-edge research project to solve a critical challenge in modern engineering.

The Challenge
Rapid battery charging in submarines is a critical, high-energy maneuver: it requires injecting hundreds of amps of direct current. To ensure safety and prevent battery damage, we need to design power converters with ultra-low ripple current and strict thermal control.

In this IPRE (Rapid Battery Charging Project), you will investigate state-of-the-art technologies and evaluate advanced topologies (such as interleaved and multiphase converters) using electrothermal simulation in PLECS, applied directly to charging stations on Chilean Navy mother ships and docks.

What will you do?

High-Current Converter Design: You will model power stages (AC/DC and DC/DC) in PLECS and design control strategies to maximize efficiency.

Electrothermal Simulation: You will analyze semiconductor losses, thermal stress in battery cells, and the impact of power consumption on the mother ship's electrical microgrid.

Profile and Prerequisites
Desired knowledge: Power Electronics and Automatic Control.

Software to be used: PLECS (ideally if you already know how to use it, or are eager to learn).

What will you gain?
You will develop advanced skills in electrothermal simulation with PLECS, high-current converter design, and naval microgrids. These skills are highly valued today in the heavy electromobility, naval engineering, and large-scale energy storage systems industries.

Are you interested in the challenge? Apply today and be part of a project with a real impact on Chilean naval technology!

¿Qué vas a ganar?
