16-05-2024 Calculating ultrasound propagation in the human body
Ultrasound is an acoustic wave with a frequency higher than one can hear and is often used in engineering. For example, there are non-invasive cancer treatments that guide acoustic energy to a focal point inside the patient's body. There, the high energy will ablate the tumor. However, it is challenging to focus behind bone, which reflects a large proportion of the energy. This project adopts a computational approach, calculating the ultrasound reflection at bone with the boundary element method (BEM). Within a research line, we already developed an open-source Python library that can simulate ultrasound propagation. This iPre considers the design and programming of computational algorithms that improve the realism of these simulations that model the treatment with focused ultrasound.
